Train accident averted in West Bengal

KOLKATA: A major train accident was averted in West Bengal on Sunday when a railway worker spotted a crack in a rail track fishplate and stopped train

According to sources, railway gateman Swapan Das made the discovery at Tarakeswar station in Hooghly district. He immediately stopped the T-76 DN Tarakeswar-Howrah local by waiving a red flag.

"He stopped the train before it could cross the cracked fishplate," Tarakeswar Government Railway Police inspector-in-charge Dulal Kundu said.

He said train services were disrupted for over 40 minutes on the route.

"The train very slowly went over the cracked fishplate and after that the track was repaired."
